What a Nutritional Therapist eats and does to find balance over the festive period

As the festive season is in full swing, the challenge of maintaining your wellness routines and finding balance over the Christmas period can feel overwhelming. Today Free Soul resident Nutritional Therapist, Marilia Chamon is sharing how she navigates this joyful yet demanding time of year, striving for balance while embracing the festivities.

Social balancing act

Festive gatherings are the heart of the season, but they can also lead to social burnout. I've learned to choose my engagements wisely, prioritising events that mean the most to me. It's okay to say no sometimes - quality over quantity ensures I enjoy each moment fully without feeling stretched.

Mindful food choices

With delicious festive foods everywhere, it's easy to overindulge. My approach is one of mindful indulgence. I don't restrict myself from enjoying seasonal favourites, but I do so in moderation. Balancing heavier meals with nutritious choices is key. I make sure that my meals are nutritionally balanced and include plenty of plant variety to keep my gut happy.

Restricting vs. indulging

It's all about moderation. Completely restricting yourself can lead to a feeling of missing out, while overindulging might cause physical discomfort or guilt. Listen to your body and treat it with kindness.

Finding time for wellness

Maintaining a wellness routine at this time of the year might seem daunting, but I find it crucial for keeping me energised. I make sure to carve out time for daily exercise – a 45-minute gym session or a 30-minute brisk walk makes a difference. Also, I don't underestimate the power of a good night's sleep. Rest is a foundational aspect of wellness, especially during hectic times.

Avoiding mental and social burnout

It's important to acknowledge that the festive season is full of excitement and making memories with our loved ones, but it can also be mentally taxing. I make sure to take short breaks for myself, whether it's a quiet coffee in the morning or a relaxing bath in the evening. Also, I keep up with my mental wellness practices, like journaling or meditation, to stay grounded and avoid burnout.

Closing thoughts

Remember, the festive season is about joy, connection, and celebration. Finding balance doesn't mean perfection; it's about making choices that feel right for you. As a nutritionist, I encourage you to listen to your body and mind, indulge mindfully, and enjoy the festivities while maintaining your wellness.

Stay nourished, stay balanced, and most importantly, enjoy every moment of this beautiful season!
